Position Summary:  General Manager (Forestview)

As a key member of the senior leadership team reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (President), the General Manager is responsible for leading the overall people and operational performance Forestview Retirement Residence.

In this role, you are responsible for all aspects of community life, including resident satisfaction, financial leadership, sales and marketing, and human resource management. Externally, the General Manager will establish strategic community relationships with key stakeholders that will enhance Forestview’s operations, reputation, and promotion in the community.

You contribute to your success through the development and delivery of relevant best practice programs, policies and services to facilitate the successful achievement Advent Health’s mission, vision and values.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Under the direction of the President, Advent Health Service Corporation (Advent) and with the support of the service provider Diversicare Canada Management Co. Inc. (“Verve”) the position is accountable for safe, consistent, high quality, resident-centred service that meets or exceeds Advent Health and Ontario’s regulatory standards;
  • Responsible for all activities leading up to the planning and preparation of the new Forestview residence, as determined by Advent Health;
  • Works closely with the Verve marketing team on the pre-opening phase to prepare and position the Forestview residence in the market, achieve or exceed all necessary occupancy targets, and set the standards for all operational functions;
  • Responsible for financial performance through occupancy and revenue growth and expense management to achieve net operating income targets;
  • Leads and contributes to all aspects of the Verve Quality Improvement (VQI) Program;
  • Create a culture to promote high quality service and excellence while maintaining a safe and healthy environment for residents, families, visitors and service team members;
  • Ensures all people related policies are consistent with the practices reflective of Advent’s mission, vision and values to adequately support resident service while meeting all necessary legislative requirements;

 

Major Responsibilities:

The General Manager is evaluated on 4 primary performance categories:

  • Operations and Quality of Resident Service;
  • Marketing and Financial Management;
  • People;
  • Community Engagement & Key Stakeholders.

Each category is weighted to recognize and reflect the priorities of the Corporation during the period under review.

  1. Operations and Quality of Service (30%)
  • Create a compelling culture of quality resident service and satisfaction to ensure every person is treated with courtesy and respect and in a way, that fully recognizes their individuality and dignity while meeting or exceeding the requirements of Advent’s mission, vision and values;
  • Ensures the residence is in compliance with all governmental legislation and corporate policies and procedures, including all aspects of health and safety. Reviews, responds and acts, where necessary, on all reports of inspection authorities;
  • Ensures internal standards and measures are implemented and monitored to cover all aspects of quality resident service. This includes: recreational, medical assessment & treatment, nursing, personal support, nutritional, dietary, social, restorative, religious & spiritual service;
  • Establish continuous quality improvement programs which includes regular monitoring of all quality performance indicators of service;
  • Ensure the Management Team leads the planning of the facility’s operations, including setting priorities and job assignments, monitoring each department’s activities, communicate policies, evaluate performance, provide feedback and assists, coaches and disciplines as needed;
  • Lead by example by conducting regular rounds to form a first-hand observation to ensure resident needs are being addressed, and an optimum level of service is provided;
  • Responsible for the facility to be safe, clean, comfortable and appealing environment for residents, staff, visitors and family members in accordance with established guidelines and legislation;
  1. Marketing & Financial Management (40%)
  • Working with the Verve marketing team, support the pre-opening and post implementation sales process through hands on involvement and reinforcement of Advent’s sales goals;
  • Maintain high occupancy through the development and implementation of the sales and marketing programs while monitoring occupancy trends to identify opportunities for improvement;
  • Participate in the development and/or changes and enhancements to brand strategies, including promotions, advertising & communications;
  • Meet with potential families, provide tours, negotiate/sign leases, and participate in the sales process as required;
  • Responsible for the leadership of the Forestview residence by overseeing the financial performance, building and service equipment maintenance, including program and human resource management;
  • Develop annual operating plans and capital budgets and execute, monitor, reports results and take corrective action as required;
  • Oversee the development of sound financial objectives and ensure they are met by forecasting, budgeting, conducting trend analysis, aligning monetary resources, measuring results; initiating corrective actions and minimizing the impact of variances to plan by working with staff to achieve desired results;
  1. People (15%)
  • Create a positive work environment by leading and motivating our people to promote and achieve a culture of service excellence, employee satisfaction and engagement reflective of the mission, vision and values of Advent;
  • Promotes people focused practices by building and encouraging a culture of strong communication and positive working relationships with staff and resident’s through timely and effective resolution of concerns;
  • Manage and address concerns and requests of resident’s family members in a positive and constructive manner within the parameters of operating realities;
  • Effectively lead the human resource and workforce planning requirements of Forestview according to its approved people policies and procedures that fully conform to current applicable laws and regulations;
  • Ensure adequate staffing the development of effective recruitment practices through appropriate selection, orientation, training and education;
  • Complies with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, and Workplace Hazardous Material Information System. This includes recognizing health and safety hazards, reporting incidents, fulfilling responsibilities under the applicable legislation, as well as participating in-services and fire drills;
  • Provide strong support to your direct reports and ensure policies, programs, procedures and practices in each functional area are carried our consistently and accurately;
  • Accountable for the development of the people plan to include: internal succession planning, performance management and coaching.
  1. Community Engagement & Key Stakeholders (15%)
  • Working in conjunction with the support of the President and Board, build strong networks and relationships with key stakeholders including government agencies, business partners, and community groups to enhance the Advent brand;
  • Represent Advent Health in the community with other health care, administrative and management networks to strengthen, broaden concepts and philosophies for personal development and capability;
  • Actively researches and develops appropriate niche programming that reflects and meets the needs of residents and families;
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications:

You will possess demonstrated skills, experience and knowledge in the following areas:

  • Degree or diploma in hospitality, business, social work, health care management nursing or other related field;
  • A minimum of 5 years of senior management experience as a General Manager in a retirement community or management experience leading multi-disciplinary teams in a related hospitality setting;
  • Experience in a progressively responsible role with demonstrated ability in leadership, human resource management, sales and marketing, and financial management;
  • Solid understanding of business planning processes and key business metrics to be achieved;
  • Demonstrated sound financial knowledge and understanding of how decisions can impact results;
  • Experience working with seniors, families, and the community;
  • Knowledge of Community Service and Assisted Living regulations;
  • Computer proficiency (Microsoft Office applications);
  • Ability to work flexible hours (including evenings, weekends).
