REPORTS TO: Administrator


Plans, organizes, and directs effective administration of the nursing personnel based on established objectives, standards, policies and procedures. Contributes to the management team of the facility in the overall delivery of health care to the residents of the facility.


The incumbent will possess a current registered nurse designation and be in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario, and will have successfully completed the Nursing Unit Administration program or equivalent. Post-R.N. education in gerontology (including diploma or certificate courses), a minimum of 3 years relevant experience in organizational management and/or long term care; as well as demonstrated leadership and administrative abilities are required. A proven management style that is collaborative and supportive is required.


  • Develops the Philosophy of Nursing, the Statement of Purpose of Nursing Service and the description of nursing functions as a member of the nursing home Management Team.
  • Responsible for good staff morale. Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive staff working environment; coaches and supports teamwork within and between departments.
  • Participates in and guides the CQI program within the service, by monitoring, evaluating and improving the quality of nursing service.
  • Implements nursing service policies and procedures and suggests updates and changes for same.
  • Attends and participates in all Regional D.R.C. committee meetings.
  • Develops a human resources plan for the service to ensure appropriate mix of professional and support staff to meet the need of the resident population served.
  • Sets goals and objectives for nursing service and established standards of resident care with resident involvement wherever possible.
  • Assists in the process of budget preparation for the nursing department, and administers the approved budget.
  • Liaises with hospitals, medical staff, community, and health care related disciplines to ensure the most effective provision of nursing care is delivered in the facility, and supervises the nursing care activities.
  • Assists in the development of, and implements policies related to all staffing matters for nursing service personnel including – development and approval of position descriptions, recruitment, appointments, evaluations, promotions, disciplinary action, and the maintenance of necessary employee records.
  • Recommends on departmental staff terminations if necessary.
  • Receives and reviews all applications for admission of residents, interviews families, and processes admissions, transfers and discharges of residents.
  • Ensures the supply and control of all nursing department supplies and equipment for maintaining resident care.
  • Ensures the supply and control of all pharmaceutical supplies.
  • Communicates and co-operates with all departments to ensure an emotional and physical environment exists which is conducive to the provision and practice of therapeutically effective nursing care. Ensures representation of staff on committees which affect service.
  • Supports and promotes orientation, staff development and continuing education for the professional and non-professional nursing staff, and performs other staff development functions as required.
  • Ensures competency of staff by a process of identification, current certification and/or re-certification for the performance of specific nursing skills.
  • Delegates clinical and managerial responsibilities to appropriately qualified staff according to applicable legislation and standards of the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Participates as a member of the research committee, providing support for education and research activities.
  • Takes charge of the facility in the absence of the administrator as requested.
  • Complies with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, and Workplace Hazardous Material Information System. This includes recognizing health and safety hazards, reporting incidents, fulfilling responsibilities under the applicable legislation, as well as participating in in-services and fire drills.
  • In cooperation with Leadership Team, provides weekend and off-site support.
  • Carries out other assignments as delegated by the Administrator.

  • Organizational Management and/or Long Term Care: 3 years (preferred)
