Assistant Groundskeeper (Summer)

Temporary Full-Time

Canada Summer Jobs Position:

This position is part of the Canada Summer Jobs program under the Government of Canada.  This opportunity addresses one of the national priorities, which is to provide job opportunities to black and other racialized youth, particularly those facing barriers to the labour market.  Candidates must be aged 18-30 and identify as black or other racialized youth.


Position Summary:

The Assistant Groundskeeper safely undertakes tasks and duties to maintain and improve the grounds and components of the Advent Health Care campus using appropriate tools and equipment.


Key Activities and Responsibilities:

  • Mowing and trimming grass throughout the property
  • Raking grass, leaves, and clearing branches
  • Preparing and cleaning flower beds, planting flowers, shrubs, trees, picking weeds, and spreading mulch and related activities
  • Sweeping sidewalks and other surfaces
  • Pruning and cutting tree, trimming bushes
  • Picking up trash and debris
  • Install, maintain, remove and repair of surfaces area (asphalt, concrete patching, paving stones, interlocking bricks, etc.)
  • Painting and basic maintenance of site components
  • Other work associated with general appearance and upkeep of the exterior of the property


Job Requirements:

  • Must be able and willing to perform all physical requirements of the position including but not limited to walking, crouching, bending, standing, climbing, and lifting, pulling, or pushing up to 50lbs on a repetitive basis, in all weather conditions.
  • Provide your own safety boots / shoes
  • Must be willing to wear a face mask when in close vicinity or close contact with residents or when homes deem it necessary
  • Must show proof of at least three doses of the mRNA Covid-19 vaccine
  • Must submit a Vulnerable Sector Screening Police Check
  • Must complete a current TB test
  • Must be willing to take a Rapid Antigen Test when entering the senior residences


Education, Skills and Experience:

  • Interested in a career related to Landscaping, Gardening or Horticulture Studies
  • Self-motivated with a strong work ethic
  • Ability to interact with residents, visitors and employees in a professional and respectful manner
  • Dependable and punctual
  • Mechanically inclined and willing to learn new skills
  • A commitment to learning, safety consciousness and compliance with all policies and procedures is essential


Additional Details:

  • Must be between 18-30 years old
  • Work week of 35 hours, typically 5 days a week, 7 hours a day with some flexibility
  • Work time frame: May – August 2022
  • Compensation: $16.00 per hour less applicable payroll deductions.
